I disagree here. at Magnavox we make some commercial SatCom telephones that work
over the Inmarsat satellites using the "M" and slightly faster "B" protocols.
Someone wanted an interim modem solution. We tried connecting modems through
these dispicable (from modem standpoints - hey - it's digital audio with heavy
duty compression) pipes. Supra == no go. The Hayes we had == no go. The
practical Peripherals 9600bps modem we had == no go. The Sportster managed to
connect and HOLD the connection to a TYMNET node. It retrained frequently. But
it DID make it. Any modem that can do that engenders no small amount of
admiration on my part.

On another paw - my personal v.everything Courier will be pried from my cold
dead fingers (unless I get something even niftier like a v.42bis capable ISDN
modem or even a 5megs/second cable modem or something like that.) IMHO that
puppy is worth every cent/decicredit/whatever I spent on it. It works 28.8kbps
when other modems groan along at speeds well under 24kbps.

This is a VERY common situation. And of course you cannot connect 28.8kbps
unless you call a 28.8bps modem.
